Several social organisations have sought the Union Government to make Section 43 of the CrPC mandatory by making a vital amendment, in order to check crime against women.
The orgnisations: Nagrik Senani Manch, Rezangla Shaurya Samiti and CLS Foundation, have also written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in this regard wherein they have stated that the rising incidents of molestation and eve-teasing at public places can be curbed to a large extent by making this section obligatory for all.
Advocate Naresh Chauhan, coordinator of the Senani Manch, said Section 43 gives private persons a right to act like a police official against those who in his presence commits a non-bailable and cognisable offence.
“Since Section 43 is optional, people choose to remain mute spectators whenever a crime happens in front of them. If the section is made mandatory then every person will be liable to face police action,” said Chauhan.
Ranbir Yadav, patron of the Shaurya Samiti, said along with non-bailable and cognisable offences, crime against women should also be included in the Section 43 so that private persons can be motivated to come forward in checking eve-teasing and molestation incidents at public places.
