Man loses Rs12,000 after hoax call

Nurpur, January 21

An anonymous caller duped an ATM card holder, Manoj Kumar, of Jassur yesterday by drawing Rs 12,050 from his Punjab National Bank (PNB) account.

The victim received a call on his mobile and the caller pretended to be a bank officer. He told him that his ATM card had developed some technical fault and asked him to reveal his 16-figure card number and PIN code. The caller assured him that his card would be rectified after verifying the number and PIN code.

The victim fell prey and disclosed his ATM card number and PIN code. When he discussed this with his friends, they advised him to rush to his bank and get his account and ATM card frozen. He approached the local PNB branch in this connection.

On verifying, Rs 12,050 was found withdrawn through ATM by the caller. He immediately withdrew the balance amount of Rs 7,300 to avoid further misuse of his card by the miscreant/s.

Nurpur officiating DSP DC Verma has appealed to the people of the area not to respond to any anonymous calls to avoid getting cheated.
