Dressed in their festive best, shoppers thronged the markets in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, on Saturday. The markets, chock-a-block, seemed to give the impression that not a single soul had stayed back home. Luring customers with bulk buying discounts and freebies, the shopkeepers and traders were, naturally, all smiles. From clothes to crackers to sweets and every conceivable gift item, the  shoppers were seen lugging everything. Keeping pace with the modern trend, gift-packaging has witnessed elaboration and refinement, be it dry fruits, sweets, chocolates, biscuits and namkeens, or even elegant little six or 12 packs of condiments. Exotic jelly candles are another item that has caught the fancy of buyers this time.

 Although most temples, gurdwaras and institutions have been lit up since Friday night, electronic laris were flickering on Saturday evening. This year, shopkeepers outdid themselves, when it came to decoration. The maximum rush was witnessed at shops selling electronic goods, gift items, sweets, utensils and toys. The sale of crackers failed to register a boom
