It’s been five days and Chokker household in Kurthala village continues to receive visitors who come and condole the death of Lt Kiran Shekhawat, the officer who died in line of duty while aboard the ill-fated Dornier Aircraft of the Navy that had crashed during a training sortie off the Goa coast. .
These visitors include commoners, Navy officials and politicians cutting across party lines, but the villagers and family are eagerly awaiting CM Manohar Lal Khattar as a gesture of recognition from Haryana government.
“Kiran was the first woman officer who died in line of duty. She not only made Mewat, but the entire state proud. In a place where higher education is still luxury Kiran left her mark in combat role in defense and left an example for generations to come. It comes as a shock to us that the state CM who is busy attending party meetings and inaugurating buildings, and didn’t have a few minutes to spare and attend her funeral or even condole the family. She laid her life for nation and we want that she gets her due recognition and the government should dedicate a girl’s college to her to inspire girls,” said Kiran’s mother in law Sunita Chokker who is sarpanch of this village.
The family voiced this demand to Congress leader Captain Ajay Singh Yadav who visited the family today.
“The demand is justified and we shall submit the same from our side to the state governor so that she gets a recognition fit for state martyr. The CM’s failure to visit family so far or announce any special recognition is not in good taste . This shows the current government’s attitude towards mewat,” said Yadav.
