More needs to be done to ease traffic snarls outside schools
UT police should come up with solutions
Car pool may not be able to solve the purpose. There are only a few students who live close-by. The Chandigarh Police should rather come up with solutions such as one-way traffic, no parking outside schools and no long stoppages during the opening and closing hours of schools. The parents should also need to encourage themselves and park their vehicles at some open space before walking down to the school gates for picking up their wards.
Amit Mittal, Chandigarh
Deploy traffic marshals outside schools
To avoid congestion on roads, parents should be motivated to adopt car pool within residential sectors. Schools themselves should upload details on their websites so that like-minded parents can opt for car pools. Traffic marshals should be deployed outside schools to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic.

Car pool to promote togetherness
Car pool to drop and pick up children will not only reduce traffic congestion on city roads, check pollution and reduce transportation cost but will also infuse a feeling of togetherness among students and their parents.
Dilbagh Rai, Zirakpur
Proper signage of pick and drop must
Schools should appoint security guards with traffic management capabilities. They will manage traffic in a more efficient way and also check the movement of anti-social elements around the schools. Proper signage of pick and drop will also improve traffic management.

Public transportation safest mode of travel
Public transportation is the safest mode of travel and the chances of accidents are less. People have to spend less money. It also helps in traffic management and checking pollution.

Make school buses compulsory
Traffic chaos in front of schools can be reduced by making school buses compulsory to ferry students. Car pooling is another alternative to reduce traffic snarls. Pooled conveyance is cheaper than individual conveyance.

Admit students residing in 1-km range
Every sector in Chandigarh has one school. At the time of the admission, principals of these institutions must emphasise on admitting students residing in the range of 1km of the school.

People must have traffic sense
Teaching people to have traffic sense is more important than encouraging them to go for car pool. If we all have patience and obey traffic rules, then there would be no chaos on roads at all. In the morning, people often leave their vehicles in the middle of the road to drop their wards at the school. If they start taking the responsibility and become more sensible, it would help a lot in managing traffic chaos outside schools.

Car pool best way to reduce traffic chaos
Car pool to drop and pick up students is the best way to reduce traffic chaos outside schools. Roads leading to schools must be marked as “school zone” so that motorists drive vehicles at a slow speed. In the morning and evening hours, special volunteers must be asked to help students in crossing roads.
Opinder Kaur Sekhon, Chandigarh
Declare schools’ entrance as “no parking zone”
Declare the front entrance of schools as a “no parking zone”. In the morning, parents should drop their wards at an earmarked space, inside or at the school gate and drive off. In the afternoon, they should park their vehicles at a proper parking space, pick up their wards from inside schools and walk up to their cars.
Tejinder Singh Kalra, Chandigarh
Deploy cops outside schools
Schools should make a list of parents coming to pick up or drop their wards from the same sector/locality and share it with all parents so that they can contact each other for effective car pooling system. At least, 2 traffic police personnel should be deployed near each school during the peak hours for better traffic management.
Dr Amit Gupta, Chandigarh
Encourage students to walk to school
Vehicles of schools should leave 10 minutes early before parents come to pick up their wards. It will help in reducing traffic congestion to some extent. Students should be encouraged to walk or cycle to school.
Ravneet Kaur, Mohali
Vendors should not be allowed outside schools
Car pool will certainly reduce traffic chaos outside schools. Student should not be allowed to bring car, motorcycle and scooter to the school. The opening and closing hours of schools should not coincide with the peak hour of traffic. Unauthorised vendors should not be allowed outside schools.
Paras R Kalotra, Mohali
Schools, cops should work out a plan
Parents must be motivated to go for car pooling to pick up and drop their wards at schools. It will also enhance the safety of children. The school authorities should work out a plan in consultation with the traffic police for parking of vehicles and smooth flow of traffic during the closing hours of schools.
Paramjeet Singh, Chandigarh
Schools must be split into two shifts
It’s high time schools in Chandigarh must be split into two shifts. Classes I to VIII should be in the morning shift and Classes IX to XII should be in the evening shift. Office timings of UT, Punjab and Haryana employees should be staggered as 8am to 4pm; 9am to 5pm and 10am to 6pm, respectively.
