Mussoorie, December 10
Students of Municipal Postgraduate College presented dance and song items to welcome freshers at a function held at the college auditorium here today. Urban Development Minister Preetam Panwar, who was the chief guest, inaugurated the function by lighting the ceremonial lamp. Students submitted a memorandum of demands to the minister for further development of the college.
Panwar said MPG College was the only institution that catered to poor students not only from Mussoorie but also from villages of the Jaunpur development region in Tehri Garhwal district. He said it was the duty of all public representatives to work for the development of the college on priority. He also assured the college authorities of his support, whenever required.
Manmohan Singh Mall, president of the Municipal Council, Mussoorie, who is also the head of the college management committee, expressed concern at the deteriorating educational standards in the institution. He blamed teachers and students alike for the situation. He said students, who gave the memorandum of demands to the minister, were not worried about the shortage of teachers in the college but were more concerned about installation of a tap and other petty issues. College students had in the past received gold medals in the university but at present the picture was so grim that no student had excelled.
Manmohan Mall said he was ready to introduce self-financed courses in the college provided students were willing to pay for them. He asked the students to think about their careers and attend classes regularly.
Earlier, principal of the school Sudhir Gairola demanded the B-category status for the college so that it could improve its functioning and results further. Former MLA Jot Singh Gunsola, Mussoorie Congress president Satish Dhaundiyal, senior Congress leader Megh Singh Kandari, ward members Vinod Semwal, Jasvir Kaur, Sashi Rawat, and Beena Panwar were present on the occasion.
President of the college Ritesh Rawat thanked the students, and teachers and requested guests for their support to the institution.
