Pithoragarh, July 14

Residents of Bui and Pato villages staged a protest at the sub-divisional headquarters at Munsiyari in Pithoragarh district today. They have been demanding the construction of a bridge at Lingurani on the Gori Ganga river in place of a makeshift wooden bridge they are using everyday.

“It is quite risky to use the makeshift bridge to cross the river. Villagers risk their lives daily. Though the local MLA had assured of constructing a bridge two years ago, nothing has been done so far,” said Harish Singh Dariyal, a social worker of Pato village.

He said villagers would not be able to shift to Ralam during tradi-tional migration during the summer if the bridge is not constructed.

Meanwhile, residents of ward number 4 of Kapkot Nagar panchayat have initiated constructing a temporary bridge on the Belang nullah on their own as “their demands have fallen on deaf ears so far.”

“We are fed up with requesting the government to consider our demands,” said Kewalanand Mishra, a local resident.

He said the non-construction of the bridge on the Belang rivulet at Kapkot town was leading to grave inconvenience.

“Not only villagers but also students are facing problems. They are not able to go to their schools during the monsoon. If the state government does not construct the bridge, we cannot let our students miss studies during rainy days. So we have started constructing the bride,” Mishra added.
