The Nari Niketan here, Haryana’s only shelter home for women that has often been in limelight for wrong reasons such as escape of inmates and suicide, has received the support of Swayamsiddha, an NGO working for the upliftment of women.

The district administration has roped in the NGO to hone skills among inmates that can make them self-dependent. The NGO’s members would regularly visit the Nari Niketan and counsel the inmates to nurture their talent, a step that would help boost their confidence, said J Ganesan, Deputy Commissioner.

To begin with, the NGO officials have got the inmates tested for skin allergy, a factor that had been affecting a majority of them. “Most of them were treated for skin infection. Besides, the NGO will keep the inmates engaged in productive activities,” said Ganesan. The NGO members would only be assisting the administration, he said.

Dr Ranjana Sharma, gynaecologist and councillor, said all the inmates were in need of mental and physical care, which would be extended to them by the NGO. They had been made aware about the need for hygiene, which would enable them live a healthy life, she said.

“We have expertise in various fields and our members will assist the inmates to start their lives from scratch,” she said.
