Nirmal Singh Nimma of the SAD was today elected president of the Kot Shamir Nagar Panchayat after two failed attempts to elect the office-bearers.

He defeated Chanan Singh, also of the SAD. The latter was taken out of the voting hall by the police when he allegedly tried to pull out his pistol during a conversation with Nimma just ahead of the elections.

Baljinder Singh of the BJP was elected senior vice-president while Malkit Singh, an Independent, was elected vice-president.

Chanan Singh had the support of local MLA Darshan Singh Kotfatta who was also present at the meeting. Chanan Singh said: “I had carried my pistol by mistake inside the hall, but I handed it over to the police. No candidate raised the matter.”

MS Bhatti, Deputy Superintendent of Police, said: “Chanan was not allowed to carry his licenced weapon inside the meeting hall. The matter will be dealt with appropriately.”

The elections were postponed on two occasions earlier on March 10 and 15 as elected members had failed to turn up in required numbers at the office. Of 13 members, at least six are Independents.
