The Sri Pratap Memorial Rajput (SPMR) College of Commerce, Canal Road, from this academic session 2015-16 has enrolled only male students for BCom course. The online admission process, which the college started recently, did not offer admission to girl students in view of the space constraints.

Further, the girl students, who had already taken admission in the college and are in the second and third year, have been shifted to Government College for Women (GCW), Gandhi Nagar and Parade, respectively, where the commerce stream is being taught. The decision in this regard was taken in the recently held meeting under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh to discuss various issues regarding setting up of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jammu.

“Yes, the Higher Education Department has issued instructions to the college not to offer admission to girl students due to space crunch,” Prof JL Bhagat, Principal, SPMR College of Commerce, said. “But in other courses like BBA, BCA and BCom (Honours), which the college offers, there is no restriction on admission of girl students. In fact, in the first cut-off merit list, which the college has issued recently, there are number of girl students who qualified for pursuing BBA and BCA programmes from our college. For the BCom (Honours) programme too, the entrance examination of which is to be conducted within a few days, girl candidates will be offered admission in the college,” he claimed.

“The intake capacity of the college is limited, but still we try our best to accommodate students more than our capacity. Now with addition in courses, it is very difficult to accommodate both male and female students. The Higher Education Department has already asked the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Regional Centre, Jammu, to vacate our office building at the earliest, which it is using to run its academic affairs,” Prof Bhagat added.

Sources said if the IGNOU Regional Centre, Jammu, was shifted from the Commerce College building, the students could be accommodated in the classrooms established in the portion of the building being used by the centre.
