SSP Swapan Sharma said, “Monad University, Hapur (UP) in a reply to the police has said that the 11 roll numbers sent by us did not belong to their varsity. Shobhit University (Modipur) has also replied back saying the university had not issued any roll numbers or degrees to students on the police list, he added.

On the other hand, the owner of a coaching centre, requesting anonymity, said, “I cannot speak without knowing the real situation.

However, issuing fake degrees is not a cakewalk as was being made out by the police. Students are not fools to have accepted fake degrees from different universities. The matter needs a deeper probe. Possible involvement of university officials also needs to be investigated, he added.

At least a dozen institutes in different parts of the country have been sent a similar communication asking for verification of degrees found from institutions in Bathinda, Karnal and Amritsar besides certain other places. A total of 358 fake degrees issued from different places are under the scanner. Some like Delhi Board of Senior Secondary Education did not exist.

At least three arrests have been made so far while one accused is absconding from among those on the list.

Yesterday, the police had revealed the names of Raman Kashyap, owner of a coaching centre in Karnal and Dr Tarsem Garg, owner of a centre in Bathinda and Pawan Kumar, a web designer from Karnal who prepared the fake degree documents

The police was working on verifying the role of Rikhi Raj, a networking expert from Dinanagar, for his alleged role in luring students. Sukhwinder Singh alias Manjinder Singh from Amritsar was absconding, the SSP said.
