Davinder Chaudhary, the suspended SHO who was booked for abetting suicide of Inderpal Singh (25) on April 29, was promoted as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) yesterday.
Chaudhary along with ASI Boota Singh, Head Constable Swaran Singh was suspended on the same day by Commissioner of Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh.
The Government Railway Police had booked the trio for abetment to suicide at the GRP Railway station. On the direction of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal the city police conducted an inquiry and ADCP Sandip Garg gave a clean chit to Davinder Chaudhary.
The police, however, found ASI Boota Singh and HC Swaran Singh involved in corruption and booked them on corruption charges. Victim’s mother, however, alleged that the police were sheltering Davinder Chaudhary.
Meanwhile, the police provided reprieve to the trio by shifting the investigation to the Vigilance. Now, both agencies have no deadline to complete their investigation. The family of the deceased had already stated that they have no hope of justice from the police but human rights bodies from the city were questioning the functioning of the police.
Satnam Singh Dhaliwal, President, Universal Human Rights Organisation, said: “It is strange that one who is facing criminal charges and vigilance inquiry for corruption has been promoted. How will a poor family fight with such an influential person? Instead of arresting the accused, the police were promoting him. The police deliberately gave a clean chit to Chaudhary as his promotion was under process. We will challenge the decision in court.”
