Now, no free movement of vehicles on Mall Road

The free movement of vehicles on the Mall Road in Mussoorie ended today with the Municipal Council (MC) imposing an entry fee at the barriers at the two ends of the road. The movement of vehicles on the Mall Road has been a bone of contention with social activists opposing imposition of an entry fee.

Social activist Ajay Uniyal, who has been opposing the move, told The Tribune that the State Human Rights Commission had also taken an adverse view of the entry of vehicles belonging to locals on the Mall Road. He said the increase in the entry fee on the Mall Road was also a violation of the High Court directions.

Uniyal said on the Mall Road, barriers used to remain open in the past for public in the winter from December 1 to March 1, but the decision of the Municipal Council to continue with the entry ban was against the interests of the people.

MC in charge Mall Road barriers Raviraj Bangari said the free entry of vehicles on the Mall Road would end from midnight. The MC had decided to ban the free entry of vehicles on the Mall Road a few months back but could not implement it for various reasons. However, it had now decided to impose restrictions in order to earn additional revenue from tourist vehicles while passes would be issued for local vehicles.
