In an order likely to cause unrest among state farmers, who are already on the warpath against the state BJP government for lack of adequate compensation for crop loss, the government has massively increased the fee for new tubewell connections to Rs 1.70 lakh per connection from the earlier amount of Rs 42,000.

“During the INLD government, the fee for new connection was Rs 7,000 per connection, but the Congress increased it to Rs 42,000. Now, the BJP government has increased it to Rs 1.70 lakh per connection,” alleged Parminder Dhull, INLD MLA from Julana constituency of Jind.

While sharing details of Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam’s (DHBVN) new order, he said apart from Rs 1 lakh fee for the connection, the farmers will have to pay Rs 70,000 more for all equipments to install new connections and it would cost around Rs 1.70 lakh.

He added in case a farmer wanted to avail an out of turn connection, they would have to pay an additional amount of Rs 1 lakh.

Dhull announced that the INLD would launch intense agitation in the coming days if the government did not withdraw its new order to increase the charges for the release of tubewell connections.

When the DHBVN CE (commercial wing) JB Mudgil was contacted, he said the hike in installation of tubewell connections had been implemented across the state.
