Haridwar, December 4
Deepika Sahu, hailing from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, reached Haridwar on a two-wheeler today during her pan-India social mission to generate awareness about safety of children, particularly the girl child.
Sahu has covered 16,000 km on her two-wheeler, going through West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nandu and Haryana. She will leave for Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, from Haridwar.
She felt quite perturbed when she heard of discrimination and the rising crime and exploitation of the girl child. Hence, she thought of generating mass awareness about these issues, Sahu said.
“Though my contribution may be quite small, I feel that every school or village where I go surely generates awareness and people realise that gender discrimination should not take place. Today, girls have excelled in almost every career,” she added.
Former chairperson of the state women commission Dr Santosh Chauhan lauded Sahu’s efforts and termed her resolve as steely as she did not bank on the government or NGOs to bring out a difference in the society.
