Overflowing garbage bins on roadsides all over the city have been causing inconvenience to residents, and commuters. They have become health hazards and a cause for concern for both Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) and residents of the city.
Those living in areas where these garbage bins have been placed, and shoppers at sabzi mandis in the city are the worst affected. The situation is grim in various sabzi mandis as most of the garbage bins are not covered properly.
A large amount of garbage spilling onto roads pose serious health hazards but the DMC is turning a blind eye towards the problem. Mukhya Nagar Adhikari Harak Singh Rawat told The Tribune that they gave instructions to sanitary workers regularly to ensure cleanliness. He lamented that lack of civic sense was contributing towards the problem.
Harak Singh said rag-pickers and stray animals take out garbage from bins and litter it on roadsides.
DMC vehicles were collecting garbage from door to door in order to make the city clean, he added.
The problem of insanitary conditions is serious near DAV College Road, EC Road, railway crossing at Defence Colony, DL Road, Mohini Road, Dharampur Sabzi Mandi, Tehsil Sabzi Mandi, near Doon Hospital, Jakhanm, Balbir Road, Inder Road and other areas.
Residents lamented that except issuing challans, the DMC was doing precious little to make people aware about the need of cleanliness and proper dumping of garbage.
They said the DMC should draft an effective plan for cleaning garbage bins at regular intervals. Those who throw garbage outside bins should be fined heavely to ensure cleanliness in the city, they added.
