The Health Department officials, on the directions of Civil Surgeon Dr Renu Chhatwal, destroyed overripe fruits at Haibowal area today.
The officials visited the fruit market, inspected the shops and destroyed overripe fruits and juices prepared under unhygienic conditions.
The Civil Surgeon, while issuing advisory to the people, said: “Cut fruits pose serious health hazards and lead to stomach infection and diarrhoea. People should avoid eating cut fruits, juices prepared in unhygienic conditions and overripe fruits,” she said.
Vendors in and around the city are openly selling fruit salad and other eatables to people, caring little that juicy fruits could land them with upset stomach.
City based gastroenterologist, Dr Vivek said people should avoid eating out and cut and overripe fruits, which are dangerous for health during this season.
“There is an increase in the number of patients suffering with one or other ailment related with stomach and people should be on the guards as diarrhoea cases are been reported in the city,” he said.
Another city based medical specialist said certain individuals were more vulnerable and fall ill after eating fruit past the point of ripeness.
“Infants and elderly individuals with weakened or underdeveloped digestive systems are vulnerable and their stomach may get upset after consuming overripe fruits because their digestive systems are unable to process the high levels of bacteria found in overripe or mildly fermented fruit,” he said.
