Patiala, December 5
After successfully launching the panghura (cradle) scheme in Patiala in April, the district administration has installed the second cradle at Patran.
The District Red Cross Society has installed the cradle at Mother India Senior Secondary School, Patran, after the school authorities volunteered to help in the noble cause.
Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam informed that ever since a girl child was found in the Patiala cradle, they had been planning to set up another one at Patran since it was amongst the most backward areas in the district and most of such incidents were reported from the area.
While we were on the lookout for a proper place, the school authorities came forward and offered their room for the cradle. They will also be helping us in the maintenance of the cradle.
“Any person can leave an infant in the cradle and the caretaker will look after the child after the bell attached to the cradle rings. The identity of parents will not be asked in case they decide to stay there till the child is taken in custody by officials. The child will immediately be taken to the hospital for proper medical examination. Later, the child can be adopted through a licenced adoption centre,” he added.
The first cradle in Patiala district was installed at Yadvendra Puran Bal Niketan, Patiala. The administration had taken the decision after four different incidents, in which kids were found dumped at different places. In August 2012, a male child had breathed his last after his mother delivered the child at the Government Rajindra Hospital emergency bathroom and abandoned him there. She had later escaped from the hospital.
