Karnal, February 9
In a relief to people living across the state, the government has decided to provide 25 per cent rebate to those paying their property tax dues and arrears for the period 2010-11 to 2016-17 by February 28.
In a letter to all municipal corporations on February 2, the Urban Local Bodies Department has asked the authorities to give one per cent extra rebate to those who will pay it through cashless system.
The government decision has led to city residents thronging the Municipal Corporation (MC) office to get the benefit of one-time rebate of 25 per cent.
As per the details available, around Rs 19 lakh of property tax has been deposited by the residents in the past three days.
Mayor Renu Bala Gupta said it was a welcoming step of the government.
Last year, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had provided relief to residents by announcing a one-time waiver of interest on property tax arrears of five years (2010-2015). Along with it, the CM had also given a rebate of 30 per cent on property tax of three years, from 2010-11 to 2012-13, she said, adding that then also, people had shown enthusiasm for depositing property tax. The Karnal MC saw a record collection of more than Rs 22 crore then, the highest in recent years.
The new announcement would now help in creating another history as people were coming forward to deposit their dues, said Dr Aditya Dahiya, MC Commissioner.
