PEC bags 38th slot, UICET 100th

PEC University of Technology, the oldest engineering institute of the city, bagged the  38th rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released by the HRD Ministry. Dr SS Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, ended up far below at 100th rank in the tally.

Both the institutes were set up in the 1950s to provide quality technical education. As per the NIRF score, PEC got 61.32 score whereas the UICET got 49.09 score.

On the parameters of teaching, learning and resources, PEC scored 62.21, while the UICET got only 39. 97 score. These are the key areas of any department as they encompass teaching and infrastructure available for the students.

When it comes to Research, Professional Practice and Collaborative Performance (RPC) both the institutes scored almost similar scores. The UICET which got 56.55 score is 0.97 score ahead as compared to PEC which got 55.58 score in this category.

In Graduation Outcomes (GO), UICET got 78.30 score while the PEC got 70.83 score which explains the effectiveness of the core teaching and learning activity and measures student graduation rate and their success in finding appropriate placement in the industry and Government or taking up higher studies. Under outreach category PEC got 55.49 score while the UICET got 51.32 score.

The UICET got lowest score of 17 in perception while the PEC got 77 score under this category. PEC deputy director Professor Sanjeev Sofat said the institute will focus on research areas as it is the need of the hour. He said the institute is also working for developing disabled-friendly buildings.

Reacting to the low ranking of the UICET, PU VC Arun Kumar Grover said how we can expect one of the oldest departments of the campus to excel when it is functioning with 50 per cent staff as the faculty posts are lying vacant. He said when adequate funds are not provided for research to the department how we can expect quality work from students and faculty.
