The lecture was jointly organised by the Indian Medical Association, Patiala, and Polo Ground Friends Club.

Delivering his talk, Dr Bakshi said joint pain due to various reasons was the fifth commonest disease in India and 95 per cent population suffers from joint pains during life. The common causes of joint pains include rheumatoid arthritis, gouty arthritis, mal-union of joints after injuries and most common is the senile arthritis. People should not feel panicky due to rise in uric acid levels in the blood as it was not a disease unless it was accompanied with swelling of joints of big toe called gouty arthritis, which needs medical intervention.

He cautioned the people visiting quacks for joint ailments who often give high doses of dangerous steroids leading to multiple complications later on and even causing spontaneous fractures of bones.

He said senile arthritis was an age-related joint problem with hundred per cent incidences, but could be delayed for a long with active exercises, including regular walking on soft surface, body stretching, avoiding wrong sitting posture such as unnecessary squatting after middle age.

According to Dr DS Bhullar, coordinator of the “Health & Fitness Talk” programme being regularly organised at the Polo Ground, it is the constant endeavour of the Indian Medical Association and Polo Ground Friend Club, Patiala, to create awareness among the masses about various health problems with focus on the preventive aspects.
