PGI sees rise in cancer cases

The Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, has been witnessing a rise in cancer cases. Punjab has the highest number of cancer patients with a total of 10,946 cases and Mohali district has the maximum number of cancer patients with the figure touching 1,952. Meanwhile, Haryana stands second with a total of 6,982 cases and Ambala district with 1,395 cases is the most cancer-prone district in Haryana.

The data was provided in the five-year (2011–2015) consolidated report of hospital based cancer registry (HBCR), under the National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The report was published by the Department of Radiotherapy, Regional Cancer Centre, PGI, Chandigarh.

As per report, Himachal Pradesh stands third with a total of 5,055 cancer cases.

Meanwhile, a total of 2,364 cancer cases were reported from Chandigarh.

Regional Cancer Centre

The Department of Radiotherapy started functioning independently in 1971 and has been upgraded to a regional cancer centre under the National Cancer Control Programme by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, in 2005.
