Retired Inspector General of Police JS Pandey said it was the duty of policemen to efficiently work for protection of human rights of a common man. Policemen should strictly avoid violating human rights while dealing with inmates.

He was speaking at the 11th state-level debate competition on human rights held at the police lines here today. Pandey said a person has the right to take up any matter with the Human Rights Commission if policemen were found guilty of violating his human rights.

The selected 12 participants from the Garhwal and Kumaon ranges expressed their views. The jury comprised of Pandey, IGP (Human Rights) GN Goswami, and Bar Association president Manmohan Kandwal.

Head Constable Surendra Singh from Almora district bagged the first prize, constable Jagveer Singh from Champawat district got the second prize while constable Vinay Kumar from the RRB-II and Sub-Inspector Kamlesh Bhatt from Nainital district shared the third prize.

The winner was given a cash prize of Rs 3,000, while the first and second runners-up were given Rs 2,000, and Rs 1,000, respectively. Kumaon division won the running trophy.

SP Mukhtiyar Mousin, ASP (Human Rights) MS Pharswan and Circle Officer Manok Katiyal were present.
