Police Martyrs’ Memorial Hockey Tournament from March 10

Twelve leading hockey teams of the country, comprising 200 players, would vie for top honours in the fourth All India Police Martyrs’ Memorial Hockey Tournament-2015 to be played at KK Hakhu Astro Turf Stadium, Jammu, from March 10 to 14.

Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra Kumar, who is also the chairman of the organising committee of the sport event, while briefing the media said various sub-committees had been constituted for arranging and supervising various activities to be carried out during the championship.

SM Sahai, ADGP, Armed, is the organising secretary of the hockey championship, which will be played on the knock-out basis according to rules and regulations of the Hockey India (HI).

The participating teams in the championship are the BSF, CRPF, Air Force, J&K XI, Namdhari XI, Punjab and Sind Bank, J&K Police, Dogra XI, New Gurdaspur Club, Core of Signal, CISF and Punjab Police. The winner team will receive a cash prize of Rs 50,000, while the runner-up team will pocket a sum of Rs 30,000. Rs 20,000 will be given to the second runner-up team.

The opening ceremony of the championship will be held at KK Hakhu Stadium, wherein Moulvi Raza Ansari, Minister for Information, Technology, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, will be the chief guest, who will declare the tournament open.

The DGP said the J&K Police were nurturing more than 18 teams of different sports, including four women teams. He added that the police sportspersons were the backbone of sports bodies and represented the country at the highest levels, besides having been conferred with state awards and Sher-i-Kashmir medals.

The DGP also disclosed that the J&K Police had formulated a sports policy, which would shortly come into force.
