A huge traffic jam was witnessed on the Jagraon-Jalandhar road today as management, teachers and students of Blossom Convent School, Sidhwan Bet, held a blockade. They were protesting against the Sidhwan Bet police for allegedly torturing one of the school bus drivers.

School chairman Harbhajan Singh said Harjit Singh, the victim, was summoned by the Sidhwan Bet police yesterday. “As instructed, Harjit, along with his father Malkiat Singh, reached the police station. The police brutally tortured Harjit in front of his father even as no case was registered against him. The police released the driver only after the intervention of village Panchayat,” said Harbhajan Singh.

When the school authorities came to know about the incident, they blocked the Jagraon-Jalandhar highway. A large number of school students also took part in the protest and raised slogans against the police department.

The protest continued for around four hours which resulted in a huge traffic jam. Commuters had to face a lot of problem. It is learnt that three ambulances were among the vehicles stuck in the snarl-up.

Jagraon SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar said he has asked Jagraon DSP Harinderpal Singh Parmar to investigate the ‘torture’ incident and submit a report to him.

“A strict action would be taken against Sidhwan Bet SHO Sukhwinder Singh if he is found guilty. I would also take a strict action against the school authorities for misusing students in blocking the traffic and causing inconvenience to commuters,” the SSP added.
