Chandigarh, March 15
The new UT IGP has launched a project ‘Nigehbaan’ under which Station House Officers (SHOs) have been asked to identify sensitive points in their areas where CCTV cameras need to be installed. Traders associations, social organisations and individuals will be then encouraged to install CCTV cameras.
The project will be completed in the next 40 days.
Sukhchain Singh Gill, SSP, Chandigarh, said ‘Nigehbaan’ is a dream project of IGP TS Luthra who has decided to get CCTV cameras installed at maximum locations in the city to deter criminals from indulging in any kind of crime.
“The aim is to bring the city under surveillance through CCTV cameras”, the SSP added.
The SSP said the SHOs would be identifying spots where CCTV cameras had already been installed and the spots where there was a need to install the cameras. “The SHOs have been asked to identify maximum number of points”, he added.
A meeting with all the ASPs, DSPs and SHOs regarding the same was held recently. All the 17 SHOs have been asked to submit a report on the same by Wednesday.
The SHOs after submitting the detailed report will have to encourage traders association, resident welfare associations, social organisations and individuals to get CCTV cameras installed within the next 40 days.
A police official said that bringing city under the CCTV surveillance would help the police in detecting crime and identifying the accused. “This move will also make the surroundings of residents safer’, the police said.
In case of any crime or mishap, the UT police will procure the footage of the CCTV cameras installed at the nearest point. As per the police, the cameras will help in keeping a check on snatching incidents and hit-and-run accident cases.
The project ‘Nigehbaan’ is in addition to the long-pending proposal of installing 660 CCTV cameras by the Chandigarh Police across the city.
Instaling cameras through public participation
