The police today resorted to a lathicharge on residents of the DL Road and adjoining colonies, who blocked Rajpur Road in protest against the death of a youth in a hit-and-run case.

Gaurav (25), a resident of the DL Road, was crushed to death by a speeding car on the Rajpur Road on November 28. The car driver fled the scene. The protesters were demanding immediate arrest of the accused.

They said the police should check the footage of CCTVs installed on the Rajpur Road and the adjoining to trace the accused. Earlier, a long traffic jam was witnessed on the Rajpur Road as the protesters refused to lift the blockade. Circle officer, Dalanwala, AK Pandey along with police force, reached the spot. He tried to pacify the protesters, but to no avail.

The situation turned worst when the protesters pelted policemen with stones. The police had to resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd. More than 10 protesters were arrested for creating a ruckus on the road. — TNS
