The journey wasn’t easy, and they fought against all odds to secure a berth for the AIBA Women World Junior Boxing Championship in Taipei, to return home victorious.

Talking to The Tribune, the trio said they started from scratch with little financial support as all three of them come from an agriculture background, but all their hard work and dedication was rewarded at Taipei.

On being asked how they won their debut fight at the international event, they said: “We had worked so hard that medals were bound to be won.” Sonia said there are 35 girls practising at the Bhiwani Boxing academy and all these girls put in 5-6 hours of rigorous training daily.

Bhiwani Boxing Club coach Jagdish Singh, said, “The rush of girls including our medal-winning stars started after Olympic medal winner Vijender Singh from our club won a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics. The attention he received from the Central and the state government, which later offered him the rank of a DSP in the Haryana Police, sparked interest in our girls.”
