Haridwar, August 10
Various functions were held in Haridwar district yesterday to mark the 72nd anniversary of the pre-Independence Quit India Movement.
The Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Sewa Dal (UPCSD) organised a special function at the Martyr Symbol Park at Lakshar to pay tributes to the martyrs. Chief state organiser of the UPCSD Rajesh Rastogi led the salute ceremony at the park, remembering freedom fighters and common people who laid down their lives for the sake of the country’s independence from British Raj.
Rastogi said on this very day, at the August Kranti Maidan in New Delhi, clarion calls of “Do or Die” and “Quit India” were given simultaneously. The Sewa Dal volunteers also took a pledge of patriotism, communal harmony and secularism at the occasion.
City Congress president OP Chauhan said the August Kranti Diwas, popularly known as Quit India Movement, led to the emergence of a strong opinion in favour of an independence movement and in just five years of its initiation, India attained Independence. — TNS
