Shimla, October 11
A 47-year-old biker Shubhamoy Paul from Kolkata, racing in competitive stretch, died in an accident on the third day today of the 18th Raid De Himalaya rally.
The mishap occurred near Chhatru in the Losar-Gramphu section, about 67 km from Keylong. Sources said as Shubhamoy was racing in the competitive stretch, his bike fell into a gorge.
Deputy Commissioner, Lahaul, and Spiti Vivek Bhatia said Shubhamoy was airlifted to Manali but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. Despite repeated attempts, organisers of Raid De Himalayas could not be contacted as the mobile network was very poor in remote tribal areas.
In 2003, two persons, Nand Lal Chaudhry and his navigator Kala, racing in the extreme four-wheeler category died in the Raid near Jalog, about 50 km from Shimla, as their vehicle skided off the road.
