Incessant rain is playing a spoilsport with the marriage season in the Valley. The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall till June 6.

Unlike the rest of the country, the weather in Kashmir has remained cold this time. The fresh rain since yesterday has affected marriage ceremonies in Kashmir. Bad weather is nothing new in the Valley but the problem of drainages and water-logging has become the big hurdle for local residents.

“Rain is not a new thing for the Valley. Since decades, people have been managing marriage functions during bad weather.

But the problem is bad roads and poor connectivity at almost every place with drains being dug everywhere. Rain creates havoc as most of the places remain flooded,” said Manzur Ahmad (45), a local resident.

With September floods fresh in the minds of people that created vast devastation in the summer capital of the state, many people now prefer to fix the marriage date after checking the weather forecast.

“We get calls from people who have to fix their marriage dates. We give the weather forecast information to those people who want to travel,” said Sonum Lotus, Director of Metrological Department, Kashmir.

Many people have cancelled the marriage dates scheduled for September. “We cancelled the marriage dates scheduled for September due to fear of floods,” said Nazar Ahmad from Peer Bagh.

The Met Department has predicted rainfall till Friday and thereafter, the weather is likely to improve.

The cloudy and wet weather has brought the day temperatures down in the Valley. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was two degrees below the average temperature.

Come ending May and the marriage season picks up and continues till the second week of June, but this time, the weather played a spoilsport, more so, in the summer capital.
