City residents will witness ‘gliders’ showering flowers to celebrate Dasehra, on Thursday, here. From sky touching effigies to gliders presenting air shows, various Ramlila committees of the City Beautiful are leaving no stone unturned to entertain and attract people at over 24 places across the city.
Shri Sanatan Dharam Dasehra Committee, which has been celebrating the festival at the Subzi Mandi Ground in Sector 46 since 1998, will have a 90-feet tall Ravana’s effigy here.
Kaptan Singh Solanki (Governor of Punjab and Haryana and Administrator, Chandigarh) and Poonam Sharma (Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh) will grace the function. More than one lakh people from adjoining sectors are expected to participate in the celebration.
The festival will also host an air show in which the hired aeroplane will drop coloured leaflets from the sky. Special gifts will be distributed among children along with special cartoon characters entertaining them. Besides effigy of Ravana, the Meghnad and Kumbhakaran’s effigy will be 80-feet tall. During the day, a shobha yatra displaying religious jhankis, bhangra shows and special scenes from Ramayana will be showcased to the general public.
Meanwhile, Shri Ramlila Committee of Sector 32 will burn to a 75-feet tall Ravana’s effigy, on Dasehra day. The committee has also hired a single-seater glider from Haryana to drop flowers from the sky to entertain the onlookers.
Besides this, the committee will also announce a ‘beti bachao’ campaign from the Ramlila dais. “The glider will entertain the public and also make a tricolour formation in the sky. We have specially hired the glider from Haryana. Besides this, we will also host special shows for children citing the history of the Hindu dharma” said Pradeep Bansal, the organising secretary. Members of the Shree Ramlila Committee of Sector 27 will showcase a 60- feet tall effigy of Ravana. The structure is being made by artists from Mathura. “The effigy is made by special artists from Mathura and is exactly 60-feet tall. We are not hosting any kind of air show, but we will distribute prizes among children, who have been participating in contests organised in these nine days” said Rajeev, member of the committee.
