Regulate PG facilities, construct more hostels
Regulate rent
The UT Administration should frame a policy to control the rent charged by owners of paying guest (PG) accommodations in the city. The rent should be based on facilities provided by the owner. This will help in ensuring better facilities for the PGs.

Crack whip on illegal facilities
The Administration must crack the whip on all PG facilities being run without registration. The authorities must also ensure that owners rent out rooms to PGs after verifying their credentials to check any kind of nuisance.

A dedicated body needed
The UT needs a dedicated body to approve applications for running PG facilties within a stipulated time. This body must also keep a check on the registered PG accommodations to ensure they do not violate rules. Only two PGs should be allowed per room and there should be at least one toilet per four PGs.

Hostels are a better option
When it comes to choosing between a PG accommodation and a hostel, hostels have the upper hand. They are safer, more comfortable and provide all basic amenities. Also, the educational institute is answerable in case of any mishap. PG accommodations, on the other hand, are governed by no rules. There are frequent quarrels that can turn ugly. The Administration, therefore, must keep a check on all PG accommodations being run illegally.

Give incentives to house owners
The Administration should give incentives to house owners to get their PG accommodations registered and rent deed executed clearly mentioning various facilities and concerns. Details of the PGs should be reported to the police.

Construct more hostels
PG accommodations, being run illegally across the city, have become a source of nuisance. While the occupants are made to live in unhygienic conditions, they park their vehicles haphazardly inconveniencing the neighbours. The Administration should construct sufficient number of hostels for boys and girls to do away with PG accommodations.

Frame a friendly policy
The Administration must bring reforms to convert PG accommodations from the bane of the city to a boon for students coming to the city from outside. Any policy on the issue must take care of both students and house owners.

Sensitise students, owners of PG facilities
The PG accommodations have become a nuisance in certain areas of the city. With PGs living in the city without any checks, problems are bound to happen. Even if the UT Administration comes up with certain reforms, their success depends on the compliance by house owners. Rather than creating restrictions, the Administration should sensitise both students and people running PG facilities.

Finding accommodation a hassle
I came to the city from Panipat to pursue higher studies and had a harrowing time looking for a PG facility. Not only these were overpriced, the rooms were mostly congested and there was a shortage of water besides the lack of quality food. PG accommodations need to be regulated by the UT Administration. The owners cannot be allowed to fix the rent as per their whims and fancies. The student population is bound to increase in the city; so it is high time that necessary steps are taken to provide best facilities at reasonable prices to outsiders.

Administration at fault
Not only students who come from outside face hordes of problems while searching for a paying guest accommodation, the residents, too, complain of ruckus created by PGs. The Administration is at fault as it has completely failed to regulate the PG facilities. There is a need to construct more youth hostels and working women hostels in view of the increasing demand.

Students bear the brunt
The lack of hostel seats in Panjab University has put students at a big disadvantage. They end up looking for PG accommodations outside the campus. This is also raises the problem of commuting to the university, adding to the monthly expenses.

Security given no importance
Staying in a paying guest facility means lack of security and unavailability of hygienic food. Hostels, on the other hand, provide all basic facilities.

Quality of food is poor
The biggest problem of staying in a PG facility is the unavailability of quality food. Dealing with the owners of these facilities is another hassle.
Arshdeep
PG facilities are unsafe
Security and safety is of paramount importance while looking for a paying guest accommodation in the city. House owners, however, do not keep a strict check on the background of people staying at their facilities. PG facilities, therefore, are unsafe and affect our studies.
