Research projects reviewed at UCOST meeting

A two day meeting of Uttarakhand Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), reviewed 70 research projects provided by the council to the universities, academic and research institute and non-government organisations.

Prof JS Rawat from Kumaon University gave weather related figures of the last 20 years which he said would help for research on climate change in near future. He said due to climate change, a new challenge had emerged while there had been no change in the quantity of total rainfall, but the period of rainfall had got short. This is the main cause of heavy downpour, cloudburst and floods seen in recent times especially in Uttarakhand. Rawat apprised that the community participation was necessary to mitigate the climate change related problems.

Forest Research Institute’s Ismita Nautiyal working on the project linked to plywood, disclosed that with rising growth of plywood industry in the country, demand for poplar and eucalyptus have also risen simultaneously. She said it had become essential to look for other fast growing trees and explore their suitability for plywood. She favoured utilising different plantation species for developing plywood.

UCOST’s Director General Dr Rajendra Dobhal congratulated the researchers for their works. Dr BP Purohit, Dr DP Uniyal, Dr Ashutosh Mishra, Amit Pokhriyal, Dr Kirti Joshi and other scientists and officers of UCOST were prominent present at the meeting.
