RFSL to develop digital forensic facilities

The Regional Forensic Science Laboratory (RFSL), Mandi, has been awarded a project for the development of state-of-the-art digital forensic facilities for the forensic setup in the state.

Dr Rajesh Verma, Deputy Director, RFSL, Central Range, Mandi, will be the principal investigator of the project (worth Rs 17 lakh), which will be executed in collaboration with the Multimedia Analytics and System group in the School of Computing and Electrical Engineering of IIT, Mandi. The proposal has been funded from the state innovation funds of the state government.

Dr Arun Sharma, Director, State Forensic Science Laboratory, Himachal, said the aim of this prestigious project would be capacity building and innovation through collaboration. The project envisages to develop cost-effective solutions to image and video enhancement, speech enhancement and recognition and will aim at replication depending on the success from the same.

It was further told that the outcome of the project will be the development of prototype tools and techniques to be shared with the RFSL. The project will offer an opportunity to RFSL scientists to be involved in the technical development of tools and gain better technical expertise in digital forensics. This will go a long way in establishing research and development ties between the IIT, Mandi, and the RFSL.
