Rs 76 lakh old notes seized in Mandi

The police have detained two persons and seized a sum of Rs 76 lakh from a vehicle near Sundernagar in Mandi yesterday. The money confiscated was in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Hitesh Lakhan Pal said the notes were wrapped in a gift pack. “The car (HP 58-7707) was on its way from Manali to Bilaspur. We have detained two persons and seized Rs 76 lakh.”

Superintendent of Police Prem Kumar Thakur said the two persons detained were employees of the Ski Himalayan Ropeway Private Limited Company at Solang Nullah in Manali.

He said Subodh Kumar Verma, the company’s accountant, claimed the money belonged to the company, adding, the income tax authorities at Mandi and Shimla and the Enforcement Directorate had been informed about the incident.

The SP said vigil had been stepped up across the state to nab offenders trying to take black money out of the state. — TNS
