Acclaimed theatre and Bollywood actor Seema Biswas shined through her solo performance of Hindi adaptation of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s play ‘Streer Patra’ as the thirteenth annual edition of Gursharan Singh Naat Utsav opened to a majestic start at the Tagore theatre here today.
The solo play with a potent content on woman perspective, directed and immaculately enacted by Seema Biswas and staged by the Jagmeera Creative Arts was aesthetically innovative which displayed the magnificence of a full-length play.
With minimal props and sets, the play brought into focus diverse social issues relating the subjugation of woman, gender disparity through life experiences of the protagonist, ‘Mrinal’, who having abandoned her marital life interacts with her husband through letters.
The paradox of her life is that while her beauty is forgotten by everybody, including her husband, her intelligence is a source of discomfort to all. In an attempt to curb her intelligence, the family relegates her to the periphery of the household, and denies her identity. That is when ‘Mrinal’ asserts her individuality and decides to break free.
Seema modulated her voice, body language, facial gestures to give life to various characters and she was at her best as she established and portrayed the character of Bindu, the girl, an epitome of innocence, tolerance but compelled by the circumstances created by family, to end her life. The play thoroughly defined ‘Mrinal’ as a symbol of courage and conviction. Punjabi play ‘Hummas’ wlll be staged tomorrow.
