Seminar on cyber security

Patiala: A national seminar on 'Cyber Security in India: Challenges and Responses' was organised by the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Punjabi University, in the senate hall of the university here on Wednesday. The seminar was inaugurated by Lt Gen NPS Hira, Chairman, Punjab Public Service Commission. Punjabi University Vice-Chancellor Jaspal Singh presided over the seminar. Jaspal Singh said the human beings had been misusing technology. He said with a surge in cyber crimes, one should be careful while using Internet services. He presented mementoes to the distinguished guests on the occasion. In his inaugural address, Lt Gen NPS Hira spoke on the importance of the cyber security and the role of government in providing cyber security to the private and public sector. SD Pradhan, former Deputy Director of the NSA and Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, stressed upon the security implications of cyber crimes and lack of infrastructure to tackle the cyber security threats. Dr Rakesh Datta, who was the guest of honour, discussed the meaning of cyber crime and considered it as an international issue. He said the cyber weaponisation in the world was the origin of stealth war. Datta stressed upon the right investment in the technological sector to minimise the risks of cyber crimes. While welcoming the guests, Dr Inderjeet Singh Chahal, head of the department, introduced the theme of the seminar. Devinder Singh, Registrar of the university, said cyber security was an important issue. He expressed concern over the increase in the cyber crimes.

STREET PLAY

A Street Play of Government Mohindra College has won the inter-zonal folk festival, held from February 27 to February 28 at Punjabi University, Patiala. College Principal Sukhbir Singh Thind felicitated the team, along with youth coordinator Gurmeet and play in-charge Dr Swinder Singh Rekhi. Thind exhorted the students to participate in co-curricular activities.

SPECIAL TALK

A special talk 'Life, Drama and Theatre: A Dialogue' was held on Wednesday at MM Modi College, Patiala, as a part of the ongoing golden jubilee celebrations. A celebrated artist and orator Samuel John shared his experiences with the students, and shed light on the varied aspects of life and theatre and the different ways in which the two are interconnected. He inspired the audience to live as an optimist and laid emphasis on realising one's social responsibilities. Through a street play by his team, he made a pungent satire on the social, economic and political situations of the present times. Principal Dr Khushvinder Kumar said the drama was an artistic reenactment of life. Dr Gurdeep Singh, Head, Punjabi Department, conducted the stage and threw a light on the social role that literature had played in elucidating different aspects of society. Prof Shailendra Sidhu presented a vote of thanks to the participants.

PLACEMENT DRIVE

Bajaj Capital and Reliance Retail visited the Rayat Bahra Patiala campus and offered jobs to management students following three rounds - written test, group discussion and HR Interaction. Reliance Retail selected six management students from MBA, BBA and BCom on a package of Rs 2.2 lakh per annum. Bajaj Capital selected nine students on a package of Rs 4.5 lakh. Reliance Retail hired Jaspreet Singh (MBA), Simranjeet Kaur (BCom), Varinder Singh (BCom), Pamma Ram (MBA), Karan Singh (BBA), Gursukhan Singh (BBA). Bajaj Capital selected Simranjeet Kaur (BCom), Varinder Singh (BCom), Adisha Dullar (MBA), Arvinder Kaur (MBA), Gursukhan Singh (BBA), Karan Singh (BBA), Amandeep Kumar (BBA), and Manpreet Kaur (BCom). Rayat Bahra Group of Institutions Chairman Gurvinder Singh Bahra congratulated the students, their parents; faculty and principal. 

SPORTS MEET

The Annual Sports Meet was organised at Shivalik Public School. Students participated with great zeal, gaiety and enthusiasm. It was a two-day event, including plethora of races such as 50-metre race, 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre, 800 metre, 1,500 metre, sack race, back race, three-leg race, relay race, etc. Participants exhibited strength, determination, skill and sportsmen spirit. Principal Bhupinder Kaur Bhamra and Administrator BS Malhotra were present.—TNS
