Shahi Imam of Punjab Maulana Habib-ur-Rahman today sounded a warning to those converting to Islam merely for second marriage. He said strict action as per law will be taken against such persons.
Addressing a news conference, he said the Muslim clergy was receiving a number of complaints where some people were reportedly converting to Islam for second marriage just to hoodwink the law. This menace was destroying many families and it should to be effectively curbed, he added.
The Imam said it was true that four marriages were permitted to followers of Islam but converting to Islam just for the sake of second marriage by obtaining fake certificate to this effect with the use of money power could not be permitted.
He cautioned those issuing fake certificates (of conversion to Islam) to opportunists and made it clear that criminal cases would be lodged both against such ‘fake’ converts and religious institutions giving conversion certificates.
He maintained that such persons claiming to have converted on the basis of bogus certificates were not Muslims but in true sense they were bringing a bad name to Islam as well as their own religion. He said he took up the matter with the All India Muslim Personal Law Board to evolve an effective mechanism against this menace.
