Sherwood college pip YPS, lift soccer title

Sherwood College Nainital lifted the 18th All-India Bhupinder Singh Memorial Soccer Tournament by defeating YPS Patiala on the concluding day of the tournament played at the Lawrence School Sanawar today.

In the semi-final matches played earlier during the day, Sherwood College Nainital triumphed over Modern School Delhi 2-1, while YPS Patiala humbled BCS Shimla 2-1.

The final match witnessed a keenly contested match between Sherwood College and YPS Patiala. Manipal Singh of YPS scored the first goal in the early minutes of the match. But, Sherwood did not lose hope and strove even harder to equalise the score.

But again Alam of YPS scored a fine goal vide a free kick. The second half of the match witnessed a determined Sherwood, eager to make a comeback. A precise shot by Rahul Hamal, the captain of Sherwood gave them their first goal in the 45th minute.

Rahul saved the day by scoring another goal for Sherwood bringing the match to a 2-2 draw. The match went into extra time with no goal scored. It was the penalty shoot-out that decided the game in favour of Sherwood 4-2. The match ended with Sherwood College Nainital lifting the coveted trophy.

Sanjay Kundu, Additional Director General of Police (Law & Order), was the chief guest on the occasion who gave prizes and the winner’s trophy to the winning team.

Officiating Headmistress Shonu Mukherji felicitated the organisers for their commendable efforts in the successful accomplishment of the tournament.

The player of the final match award was bagged by Rahul Hamal of Sherwood College, Nainital. Best goalkeeper of the tournament was given to Shazor Singh of Modern School, Delhi, while the highest scorer of the tournament was grabbed by Arman Sagar of Modern School, Delhi.

The best player of the tournament award was bagged by Tenzing Jordan of Sherwood College, Nainital.
