Muharrum processions were held in sub urban Jwalapur in Haridwar district today in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, and 72 other martyrs who laid down their lives in the battle of Karbala in Iraq.
Youths were seen flagellating themselves as part of the mourning as they remembered the sacrifice of Imam Hussain and his supporters. The mourners chanted ‘Ya Hussain’ during the ‘tazia’ procession.
Elaborate security arrangements were put in place along the Muharram route while traffic diversions were made prior to the passing of the procession.
A large number of people participated in the ‘tazia’ processions in Maidaniyan, Kotarwan, Ehbab Nagar, Kaithwada, Mandi Ka Kuan and Kassaban colonies.
In households, religious offerings (majalis) were carried out, the holy Koran was read and prayers were offered at mosques.
People also did charity on the day, which has specific significance in the Islamic calendar. They also distributed fruits. Local residents Hazi Irfan Ansari, Hazi Riyaz Ansari, Naeem Qureshi, Rao Rizwan, Shahbuddin Ansari, Chamman Peer and Gulfam said the procession culminated with the burying of ‘tazia’ late in the evening.

Dehradun: Shai Muslims held ‘tazia’ processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain to observe Muharram on Saturday.
Muharram is a day of bereavement, when Muslims do charity, observe fasts and pray remembering Imam Hussain. The day is also known as ‘Yaum-e-Ashura,’ the day of enlightenment. The ‘tazia’ procession started from Imambada on east Canal Road and passed through Survey Chowk, Tibetan Market, Darshan Lal Chowk, Tehsil Chowk and finally culminated at Imambada, Naya Nagar, on Gandhi Road.
Tight security arrangements were made by the police on the entire route. Girls and women, dressed in black, sang ‘marsiyas’ tearfully, remembering the sacrifices of Imam Hussain. The procession was headed by people carrying black flags. Young boys flagellated themselves with blades, chains and swords and bled to mourn the day. The procession, organised by Anjuman Mominin, culminated on the Gandhi Road.
