Spiritual guru-turned politician Satpal Maharaj began his annual three-day Baisakhi religious discourse on Tuesday. He addressed a gathering of around 10,000 people.

Due to the ongoing Ardh Kumbh, the mela administration has shifted Satpal Maharaj’s religious discourse to BHEL Sector 2 ground to avoid congestion within the city periphery.

Satpal Maharaj, former Union minister, while addressing the gathering, urged devotees to shun negativity as this was the only way to eradicate social malpractices like corruption, anger, violence, differences and other evils from society.

“Only peace and harmony can lead India to the path of development for which contribution from all of us is required. There is no magic wand to do so. Sincere efforts will pave the way for making India a global superpower in terms of both spirituality and development,” said he, two-time Congress Parliamentarian from Pauri Garhwal, who joined the BJP two years ago.

Satpal Maharaj, while emphasising the need of communal harmony, said every religion preaches love, harmony, equality and peace so there was no point differentiating between people on the basis of different sects, caste, community, religion or region.

The guru said, “Ganga doesn’t ask a thirsty person of his identity and provide salvation. Who we are to have bias, prejudice or treat people on the basis of their religion, caste or colour?”

His son Vibhu Rawat, legislator wife Amrita Rawat, Suyash, Ardhya and CL Tandon were also present.
