Simran clinches 57th rank

Simran Sachdeva was all elated after securing all-India rank 57 in the AIIMS entrance examination. The daughter of Dr GP Sachdeva, a psychiatrist, and Dr Harleen Sachdeva, Simran wanted to become an IAS officer until she was in Class X. But seeing her father referring many cases to neurologists, she changed her decision and decided to become a neurologist or a neuro surgeon instead.
“I decided to heal people of neurological disorders,” says the 17-year-old Simran. She wants to pursue MBBS from AIIMS, Delhi.
She passed out from Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, securing 97.4 percent marks in Class XII. She said regular studies and coaching classes helped her clinch the rank. There is no shortcut to success. She studies consistently for around 8 hours daily. Guidance from parents, positive mindset, setting her goal while she was in Class XI helped her achieve the to rank, she said.
Including Simran, most of the students who did well in the exams said they mastered the NCERT books during the preparation for the entrance examination.
Sukirat Singh, who has secured the 138th rank is also following in his parents’ footsteps. His father, Dr Rupinder Singh Bhatia, is a neurologist at SPS Hospital, and mother, Dr Hardeep Kaur Bhatia, a gynaecologist at USPC Jain Hospital. “Though I chose medical, I want to become a surgeon instead. I think it is a very challenging field,” he said.
A student of Scared Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, he secured 95.6 per cent marks in Class XII. Speaking about the preparation for the entrance exam, he says, “It is more like a marathon than a sprint. You have to put in the same effort with the same intensity every day.”
Ishudeep Kaur, another student who has secured the 139th rank, wants to become a cardiologist. She has also secured the 54th all-India rank in the entrance examination of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER).
A student of Guru Nanak International Public School, she secured 96 per cent marks in Class XII. Her father Ravinder Singh is into the tyre business and mother Jaswinder Kaur is a teacher at a private school.
“For the past two years, her only work was to study, go to school or coaching classes or study at home. The only breaks she used to take were to do some stretches,” her father said.
“She was inspired to become a doctor by her grandmother when she was still a child. Since then, she has harboured this dream. Thankfully, she has cleared the first milestone on the path to becoming a doctor,” her father says.
Speaking about her strategy for preparation of the exam, Deepinder Kaur, who has secured the 331th rank in the exam, said she studied different subjects at regular intervals during the long hours of study.
Raghav Grover, who secured the 72th rank in the JIPMER entrance exam, now secured the 1350th rank in the AIIMS entrance examination. He said he wanted to become a neurologist. He said though both his parents were into the footwear business, they wanted him to become a doctor.
“Families also have to adjust as students get too busy during the two years of preparations for the exam,” said Surinder Singh, father of Navdeep, who has secured the 1311th rank.
