Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh has issued directions for shifting the sites of solid waste management plants in various cities.

The government is also considering a proposal to set up an authority — outside the purview of the Local Bodies Department — to manage the plants.

Congress MLAs Pargat Singh (Jalandhar Cantt) and Inderbir Bolaria (Amritsar South) had quit the SAD over the contentious issue, taking up cudgels on behalf of residents of their constituencies.

They had objected to the proximity of the sites to residential areas.

Welcoming the move, Pargat said a committee had been constituted by Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu to explore the best technology for solid waste management.

Similar projects have been planned in the districts of Patiala, Ludhiana and Bathinda.
