Snowfall in the higher reaches and drizzle in the lower areas today plunged the mercury across the state.

The sky remained overcast in Dehradun, adding to chill. Residents were forced to remain indoors and the markets wore a deserted look.

The higher reaches of Chamoli district, including the Badrinath shrine, received fresh snow while icy winds swept the entire district, said the disaster management office in Gopeshwar.

The lower areas in the district received light showers.

However, the drizzle came as a relief to farmers, who were apprehensive about damage to the wheat crop due to deficit rain this winter.

Tourists in Joshimath, Auli, Gwaldam and Lohjang were delighted as they received news about fresh snowfall in the higher reaches of Chamoli district.—PTI
