At a function organised for the purpose, Dr BS Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor and chief guest at the event, congratulated the members of the society and stated that the scholarship would go a long way in motivating sports persons and offering much-needed help to poor students for pursuing higher studies.

Dr Dhillon urged the students to excel in sport and academics, and thus bring glory to the institution. He later gave away the scholarship cheques to the deserving students.

Dr Harjinder Singh Dhindsa, who flew down from Australia for the event, shed light on the objectives of the society. He said more steps would be taken towards the welfare of students in the coming times.

He applauded the untiring efforts of the PAU alumni, who had come from different parts of the world to take part in the event, towards the establishment of the society.

Dr Sanjeev Ahluwalia from Canada said Dr Parmar was not only a national-level sportsman but also brilliant student.

Of Rs 30 lakh donated by the society, Rs 20 lakh will be deposited permanently in the student welfare fund.

This sum will be used to help nine deserving and economically weak students. A sports award in the memory of Sardar Pyara Singh Parmar would be instituted, under which a sum of Rs 25,000 will be given to two PAU students winning medals in the state-level games.
