To promote cycling in Panjab University, the authorities have identified 15 parking stati-ons where contemporary cycles will be available for the students, faculty and visitors to commute on the campus. At least 15 to 20 contemporary cycles will be available at each parking lot.
Any person can take a cycle from any parking lot to go anywhere on the campus and can park it at another spot. Later, anyone else can use that cycle from that particular spot to commute on the campus.
The authorities have identified parking lots in those areas where the student number is high, including places like hostels, Law Department, near library and Fine Arts Department.
PU Registrar Col (Retd) GS Chadha said the parking lots had been identified and soon the cycles would be purchased to start this unique experiment on the campus for the students and faculty. He added that the purpose of launching cycles again on the campus was to facilitate the students to commute and live a healthy life.
It may be mentioned that under the ‘green campus’ proposal the university has demanded Rs 40 crore from the University Grants Commission (UGC), the condition is dense planning over dispersed layout to avoid use of excessive motorised transport and encourage the use of public transportation with better road planning to reduce fossil fuel consumption, use of alternate fuel vehicles such as CNG, biofuels, electric vehicles, solar vehicles with charging station and bicycles.
