Chandigarh, January 2
A special checking was conducted at Chandigarh railway station after a high alert was sounded by the security agencies in the wake of a terror attack at Pathankot in Punjab today.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP), along with the Chandigarh Police, carried out the day-long checking at the station.
While the two agencies received the orders for special checking later in the day, the personnel had already started the exercise by then.
Around 11.45 am, a team consisting of the bomb disposal squad of the Chandigarh Police, the RPF and the GRP, along with sniffer dogs and bomb detection equipment searched the railway station premises.
Trains, railway parcels, luggage and the parking lots were also checked thoroughly. Taking no chances after the high alert, the RPF and GRP jointly carried out frisking and checking of passengers, luggage and coaches in the day-long exercise.
RPF Station House in-charge Inspector GS Waraich said during the special checking, luggage and passengers, especially of Shatabdi Express and other long-route trains, was carried out today.
RPF SHO Hernak Singh said the parking areas on the Chandigarh and the Panchkula sides were also thoroughly checked.
All trains departing from and arriving at the station were checked. Passengers were not allowed to board the trains till all coaches were checked to ensure their safety.
