Now, speed post and express parcels from Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Amritsar, to all metro cities in the country will be delivered the next day while those to the North-East areas will reach within two to three days. Earlier, the delivery to metro cities used to take 7 to 10 days while those to North-East were delivered anytime after a fortnight.

This has happened after the Punjab postal circle roped in airlines for the delivery by flights. Earlier, all these postal articles were sent through trains.

The airlifting service, which the department termed as historic, was launched by the Chief Postmaster General Punjab and Chandigarh, PK Swain.

“With the airlifting, the speed post and express parcels to Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kolkata would reach next day if they are booked by even 8 pm in Chandigarh,” Swain told The Tribune, today.

With a view to provide faster and reliable transmission for early delivery of speed post and express parcel booked in major cities of the Punjab circle, these priority articles booked till previous evening in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Patiala and Amritsar, will be transmitted during the night through the departmental mail motor services to Chandigarh and then handed over to airlines in the morning for air transmission to far-off destinations.

Swain said this would provide a huge impetus to business, trade, commerce and industrial activities and help in the economic growth of the region. “ Traders in Punjab have business links with those of North-East and the air transmission of priority speed post and express parcels to cities like Guwahati, Silchar, Agartala, Itanagar, Shillong and Dimapur will accelerate the economic activities,” he said.

While the first consignment was handed over to SpiceJet representatives at the Chandigarh GPO, flights of other airlines like IndiGo and Jet Airways will also be used for the purpose. “An airlifting service will also be launched from Amritsar on Sunday,” Swain added.
