State NCC Directorate bags national banner after 38 yrs

National Cadet Corp’s (NCC), Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh Directorate, has bagged the overall championship banner for the Republic Day camp: 2015 after 38 years. The directorate had last won the banner in 1977.
The bannner was received by the Additional Director-General, Maj Gen GS Chima from Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the Prime Minister’s rally in New Delhi today, which marks the culmination of the three-week-long camp.
The directorate’s contingent, which comprised 115 cadets, including 42 girls, was commanded by Lt Col Jasbir Cheema. A total of 2,070 cadets, including 707 girls from 17 directorates across the country, participated in this year’s camp
“It is a wonderful achievement amidst a very tough competition. The training of the cadets is not restricted to the R-Day camp, but is a succession of activities throughout the year,” said Maj Gen Chima.
The awards won by the directorate include Best in General Proficiency, Best All-Round Improvement, Best in Aero-Modelling, Best in Radio Control Aero-Modelling, First in National Integration Awareness Programme, Best Cadet (Junior Wing), Best Cadet (Army), Best Cadet (Air).
Cadets of the directorate won the gold in aero-modelling competitions and the bronze in ship-modelling. Cadet Under Officer Reena commanded the girls’ contingent at Rajpath. Cadets of Remount and Veterinary squadrons won nine gold, five silver and three bronze medals.
The aim of the Republic Day camp is to provide the cadets an exposure to the country’s rich culture and tradition.The camp is a reflection of “mini India”. A programme is being organised in Chandigarh on February 2, primarily for the parents of the cadets.
